Finding a job in Dallas is not that hard if you have the right qualifications, qualities, and if you have made the right preparations. There are many job openings in different industries like banking and finance, engineering, information technology, manufacturing, petrochemicals, real estate, telecommunications, tourism and transportation, and logistics.

Dallas is a city in Texas and the seat of Dallas County with a population of 1.3 million making it the 3rd largest in the state and 9th largest in the U.S. It is the economic center of the Dallas metropolitan area that includes Arlington and Fort Worth which is the largest such area with no navigable link to the sea. It was founded in 1841 first as a town then incorporated as a city in 1856. Historically, it was an important center of the cotton and oil industries because of its strategic location along many rail lines and now it has a strong financial and industrial sector and is a major inland port, primarily due to the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Dallas is home to ten Fortune 500 companies and is one of 11 cities in the U.S. categorized as ‘World Class Cities’ and also rated as a ‘Beta World City’.

Dallas was one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. and experienced a lot of urban sprawl. It is a good example of a gateway city which serves as a funnel for goods, people, services, and ideas flowing into the hinterlands and also local products going outward to the rest of the country. This is indicated by the numerous quantities of wholesale businesses, insurance companies, and financial institutions, national and regional headquarters of various companies, and state and national departmental offices as well as the volume of passenger traffic going thru the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Outlook for employments in Dallas is good with varying degrees of opportunity depending on the industry but based on comprehensive analysis the prospects of being hired for a job in Dallas is best in the construction, government, wholesale and retail trade, and scientific/professional sectors while employers in finance, food processing, education and healthcare are reducing number of workers and tourism/hospitality, transportation/logistics and manufacturing of durable goods are expected to stay as is. Manufacturing which has greatly declined in most other U.S. cities is well in Dallas particularly in aerospace, apparel, electronics, and food processing. This third quarter of 2010, from July to September, employers in the area slightly increased hiring and around 13 percent hired more employees while about 8 percent reduced their payroll, 75 percent maintained their staff as is, while about 4 percent had no certain plans for hiring. Generally, employers expect their staff to be higher than the second quarter and anticipate a hiring pace faster than last year. The median household income in Dallas is at $40,147. Unemployment level is at 8.7 percent as of April 2010, slightly higher than the 8.1 average for the state. This is very good considering the current economic downturn affecting the U.S wherein unemployment in a few cites has even reached more than 20 percent and the average for the whole U.S. is around 9.8 percent.

All other things being equal, some things you can do to help achieve success in your application for jobs in Dallas are: 1) creating a network of people, aside from friends and family, who can help direct you to great job opportunities; 2) always be prepared with a concise but valuable response to the question “can you say something about yourself?” or other to that effect; 3) knowledge is power and gives you confidence, so you must do your research about a company before applying; 4) During interviews, show confidence, stand straight, make eye contact, connect with a firm handshake, and be attentive to questions giving them, again, concise but valuable answers; 5) Aside from just answering questions, you can also ask questions yourself. This could demonstrate your interest to the company and also help you find out if this is the right place for you; and 6) Maintain the ‘3C’s’ – calm, cool, and confident. You know you are capable and by maintaining, the interviewer will most likely believe in you.
